Born 1st January 1864, Steiglitz was an American photographer and modern artist who helped promote photography as an artform, and was a key figure in the Pictorialist movement.
Steiglitz formed an exhibition society known as the "Photo Sessions", as well as photography magazine "Camera Work" which promoted photography as a modern artform, contrary to the belief of art critics of his time. He ran a series of influential galleries that exhibited American photography amongst European paintings, sculptures and fine arts. The introduction of famed artists such as Picasso and Matisse to the American public where in these galleries, in which Steiglitz hoped to establish photography as a fine art. |
